Is media really fulfilling its social responsibility? Is a booming mass media posing threats to the democratic way of thinking? Is it posing challenges to a country like India where media has a greater social responsibility rather than merely providing information and entertainment?
In order to address such issues and many more, a one day seminar “Challenges and Responsibilities in Media Practices” is organized on Friday March 2, 2012, by the Visual Communication Department of the Sri Shankerlal Sunderbai Shashun Jain College for Women, Chennai.
“In recent times Indian media has been subject to a lot of criticism for the manner in which they have disregarded their obligation to social responsibility, says Mr. Vimal Kumar Srimal, Secretary SSS Shasun Jain College.
“Though media has at times successfully played the role of a watchdog and has also aided in participatory communication, values and ethics, the corner stone of media responsibility is missing.”
“The purpose of the seminar is to discuss ways and means of inculcation of professional integrity and ethical standards in media practices through self regulatory mechanism across media organizations,” he adds
There are four working sessions and two of them ‘Values and Ethics in Media Practices’ and ‘Technology in Media Practices’ are going to be addressed by media professionals. The other two; ‘Horizons of Visual Communication’ and ‘Conventional and Social Media’ will be handled by academicians of media studies of Chennai colleges.
An impressive panel of speakers is lined up for the day. S Muthiah, Journalist and Madras Historian will the giving the key note address at the inaugural session. The Valedictory speech will be by P.M. Beliappa IAS (rtd).
TN Gopalan- Senior Journalist, (BBC Tamil), Babu Jaikumar, Senior Journalist Indian Express, K.N Arun - Senior Journalist are on the panel ‘Values and Ethics in Media Practices.’
AS Panneerselvam, Director Panos South Asia, Sadanand Menon (Photographer and media critique) and Benedict Gnaniah, Advertisement professional, will be speaking on ‘Technology in Media Practices.’
K. Hariharan, Director LV Prasad Film and TV Academy, Abdul Faiz. HoD Viscom New College and Dr. Syed Ali Mujtaba, senior journalist and Faculty SSS Shasun Jain College will be address the theme ‘Horizons of Visual Communication.’
Sourav Jain - Echo Virtual Marketing Ecosystem, Rama Prabha- HoD Viscom GuruNanak College, Tamil Selvi - Faculty SSS Shasun Jain College, Chennai will be speaking on the panel ‘Conventional and Social Media.’
The seminar is open to media professionals and academicians and all those who have a deep interest in the media discourse. The students of Visual Communication of SSS Shasun Jain College will be the core participants of the seminar.
